TIME BOUND:

96 Encapsulations

Lexysketchy

Before an architecture graduate can become a full-fledged licensed architect, one must undergo a 2-year apprenticeship at a firm. They say the first 3 months of an apprenticeship are always the hardest— mental adjustments are made, standards are learned, and all the necessary hard and soft skills are developed.

With that timeline, every day for the first 96 days of my apprenticeship, I decided to create a small 1-inch x 1-inch drawing that summed up a learning or an emotion that left an imprint on me each day. It served as a visual journal, and through the process it reminded me of how much I've grown, as well as how much more I can grow into, especially when days were tough at the office.

What inspired me was the idea that our experiences, no matter how small, compound into something bigger and more significant over time.

After getting home from a long day at the office, I would sit in front of my desk after dinner and think about all that I learned and felt that day. A good amount of time was spent just staring at that day's blank 1-inch x 1-inch box while allowing myself to get lost in my thoughts. Once I pinpointed the highlights of my day, I came up with a keyword that encapsulated the learning or emotion that stood out. From there, I would pick up a graphite pencil and start drawing.

Each piece is quite abstract, and my goal there was to convey honestly through lines, shapes, forms, and varying shades my thoughts and emotions.

Sketching has become one of my outlets to decompress, and that in itself was a source of motivation for me to keep going. While I'm constantly pushing myself out of my comfort zone during the day, moments spent sketching calmly bring me back to recalibrate. I find that small daily drawings are pretty sustainable especially when you have a busy schedule, so I'd like to explore it more in my future projects. Perhaps I'll delve into other themes aside from architecture, other timelines, and other shapes as well, aside from the squares I'm doing for this project.

I'm glad there are accessible platforms online where Filipino artists can freely show and talk about their works. No matter how old someone is or no matter where they are in the world, they have a chance to express themselves and be discovered. I believe art is meant to be shared, and art can be that bridge that brings humans together.
